Astronomy and Physics, 2012
Activities: Tennis, Society of Physics Students, Commuter Student Organization
Hometown: Montoursville, Pa.
High School: Montoursville High School
Most Influential Professor: Dr. Erickson, who teaches many of the astronomy classes, really knows his stuff. You really gain a good appreciation of this as you progress through junior and senior years.
Favorite Part of Class: The first ten minutes of every upper-level astronomy courses is known as the "liberal arts" portion of the class. Topics vary daily and can be about semi-obscure historical events, political discussions, grammar, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, or just about anything else that comes to mind.
Getting Involved: I was lucky to land a work-study position as an assistant to the campus web designer. It has nothing to do with my major, but I’ve been helping to maintain the web site over the past few years. As everything becomes more web focused, I’m fortunate to have gained a lot of skills that may come in handy someday. I’ve already put a couple of them to use in order to begin my own webcam astronomy (with the help of the College’s webcam and telescope)!
Advice: If you’re thinking about majoring in astronomy or physics (or both) – sit in on a class or two when you visit. You’re welcome to join us, so take advantage of it!
