April 24, 2012 Update
TO: Members of the Lycoming College Community
FROM: Peter R. Lynn, Chair, Lycoming College Board of Trustees
SUBJECT: The search for Lycoming's next president
I am writing to keep you posted on the early planning for the presidential search. Two committees will be engaged in the work of the search. The Search Committee, comprised of trustees, faculty, staff, and students, will be responsible for developing the search plan, the timeline, and the pool of candidates to be considered. After narrowing the pool with consultation of all campus constituencies, the Search Committee will make their recommendations of the candidates of choice to the Trustee Selection Committee after on-campus interviews. The Selection Committee will then make a final decision on behalf of the Board of Trustees regarding Lycoming's next president. I am pleased to announce that trustee Mr. Marshall Welch III will chair the Search Committee.
We have engaged a professional search consultant, Dr. Thomas B. Courtice of AGB Search, who will be assisting us with all aspects of the work before us. Tom has eight years of search achievement and nearly four decades of prior accomplishment in college administration. His most recent assignment before launching his search practice was as president of Ohio Wesleyan University (1994-2004).
The first critical step in the search process, the pre-search study, is scheduled to occur during the first week of May. We realize that this is a very busy time of the academic year, but we are hoping that the week between finals and commencement will allow Tom to draw your engagement in this first critical step of the process. He will be on campus to meet with all of you at that time to learn more about the attributes you hope to see in our next president. Marshall and I encourage your direct participation in these important conversations. It is essential that we get the search started before the summer break.
Tom's conversations with you and the pre-search study have three primary purposes:
- To ensure he will be well informed about Lycoming College, thereby performing his consultative role with full understanding;
- To give all constituencies an opportunity to register their views about Lycoming's future needs and priorities;
- To enable Tom and the Search Committee to produce a Presidential Search Profile that outlines the key opportunities and challenges facing our next president and a related set of presidential attributes and talents that we all desire.
As the executive assistant to the search committee, Diane Carl will be developing a comprehensive interview schedule for Tom. We ask that you respond with your participation and your best thinking about Lycoming's future. If you have any questions at this early stage, please let Marshall or me know. I thank you in advance for your participation.
