Dr. James Douthat is the 14th President of Lycoming College, a private college of liberal arts and sciences, founded in 1812. Under his leadership since 1989, the College's enrollment has grown by 27% to its maximum size, and its endowment and other funds under management have increased from under 20 million to over 115 million. Since his arrival, the campus has been involved in strategic planning processes, the establishment and implementation of a new faculty governance structure, several major capital campaigns, a significant building program and the adoption of a revised curriculum for the College.
Dr. Douthat began his career at Duke University and served there as Dean for Student Life until 1980 when he went to Albion College in Michigan where he was Executive Vice President. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, Dr. Douthat earned a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary, and a master's in divinity and a doctorate in educational management from Duke University.
President Douthat has served as chair of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), the Williamsport Area Chamber of Commerce, the Middle Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC), and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. He is currently on the boards of the Susquehanna Regional Healthcare Alliance, Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center, the Industrial Properties Corporation of Lycoming County, the Lycoming (County) Foundation, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Educational Television Association (WVIA public television and radio), and the Williamsport Area Chamber of Commerce. Other public service has included the chairmanship of the Lycoming County United Way Campaign and memberships on the National Advisory Board of the School of Theology at Claremont (CA), and on the board of Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities. His interests include the study of American History (especially the life and times of Jefferson), 18th- and 19th-century Japanese netsuke, and foreign travel, having visited over two dozen countries.
Emily and James Douthat are the parents of two grown children, Mark, who lives in Connecticut, and Anna, a college senior.
