Just What Is Recruitment?

Recruitment is a period where fraternities and sororities on campus plan fun and exciting calendar of events throughout each semester. Participating in recruitment is free and does not require that you join a sorority or fraternity, but it is a great way to get to know a wide range of students in different programs and of different ages. This period is designed to get to know the members of each sorority or fraternity as a whole.

Recruitment at Lycoming College

Here at Lycoming College, recruitment is viewed as a yearlong process designed for students who are interested in Greek Life to to get to know the fraternity or sorority as whole as well as each individual member.

Formal recruitment periods are a 4-day week long event held by Lycoming College's Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council (IFC) that takes place in the Fall and Spring semester. The 5th day is Bid-Return Day where students who went through Recruitment find out if they received a bid or a formal invitation from one of the sororities and fraternities.

Students who are interested in Greek Life can sign up to participate in the formal Recruitment process or attend events that are held by each Greek organization throughout the semester. Involvement in Greek life is open to all students who meet the minimum GPA requirements, and who have been enrolled for one full semester.

During the remainder of the year, Continuous Open Bidding (COB) is in effect. In COB, a Greek organization may officially extend an invitation for membership to interested individuals.

There is no obligation to join a Greek organization and students are encouraged to attend Recruitment to see what Greek Life is all about and meet many different people who are committed to promote academics, fellowship, leadership development, group responsibility, and service to both the community and the campus.

Because Alpha Sigma Tau is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), it recruits new members under NPC's guidelines.

National Panhellenic Conference, founded in 1902, is an umbrella organization for 26 inter/national women's fraternities and sororities. Each member group is autonomous as a social, Greek-letter society of college women and alumnae. Members are represented on over 620 college and university campuses in the United States and Canada and in over 4,800 alumnae associations, making up over 3.5 million sorority women in the world.

its women's fraternities by promoting values, education, leadership, friendships, cooperation and citizenship.

So Who Can Join Alpha Sigma Tau?

Active, Self-Reliant, Trustworthy is the Alpha Sigma Tau motto and we welcome all women who uphold this motto. There is no exact mold for being an Alpha Sigma Tau sister. We are a diverse organization and welcome any women who will uphold our motto, believe in our beliefs and will show devotion to AST!

Why Should You Join a Greek Organization?

- Of North America's 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by Fraternity men and Sorority women.

-40 of 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910 were Fraternity men.

-With the exception of two in each office, every US President and Vice-President born since the first social Fraternity (founded in 1825) was a member of a Fraternity.

-76% of all Congressmen and Senators belong to a Fraternity.

-Less than 2% of an average college student's expenses go toward Greek dues.

-100% of the men on Apollo 11 were Fraternity men.

-65% of doctors are in Greek Life.

-Statistics show that Fraternity and Sorority members have a higher rate of graduation from college than their non-member counterparts.
