Lycoming College continued its climb up the U.S. News & World Report National Liberal Arts Colleges list this year, landing at No. 117 in the 2020 ranking — up 14 spots from the 2019 ranking. Lycoming College has consistently risen in the rankings, moving up 47 spots since 2016.

In addition, this year Lycoming College received special recognition for ranking No. 25 on the U.S. News Social Mobility National Liberal Arts Colleges list. The new Social Mobility ranking measures two factors assessing graduation rates of Pell-awarded students.

U.S. News & World Report provides objective college rankings that help students and their families compare the academic quality of higher education institutions across the country.

Lycoming recently welcomed the Class of 2023 to campus, recognizing it as having the strongest academic credentials of any incoming class in more than a decade. With 25 percent of students ranking in the top decile of their high school class, the class exceeded by six percentage points the average for freshmen classes of the past decade. The College also improved its selectivity as it accepted only 61 percent of applicants as compared to 72 percent five years ago.

“Our continued upward movement in the U.S. News rankings communicates to families that Lycoming College provides a high-impact 21st-century liberal arts education,” said Kent C. Trachte, president of Lycoming College. “The establishment of our Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences, as well as other investments, such as new and renovated facilities, new majors in biochemistry and neuroscience and a minor in entrepreneurship, and a program in Outdoor Leadership and Education have strengthened our educational program, and this rise in the rankings brings those successes to light.”

Lycoming College also rose in the Washington Monthly college rankings, claiming the No. 100 spot in the publication’s 2019 Liberal Arts Rankings. Since 2005, the Washington Monthly has ranked liberal arts colleges — four-year institutions that award almost exclusively bachelor’s degrees and that focus on arts and sciences rather than professional programs — based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service.
