Already recognized by Colleges of Distinction for its innovative approach to higher education, Lycoming College was further honored this year for its expert integration of the liberal arts with a modern approach to scholarship that includes experiential learning opportunities for both business administration and education programs.

Colleges of Distinction provides college-bound seniors and their families with a one-of-a-kind resource to find the best-fit school for them. The guide evaluates schools based on their ability to provide a high-quality student experience, as well as a thorough liberal arts education. Lycoming was named a College of Distinction in January for its engaging student body, excellence in teaching, vibrant residential campus community and for guiding students toward successful post-college careers.

Lycoming has modernized its approach to educating future teachers by enabling them to enter the profession with a true academic major and a teaching certification. Whether students choose to study physics, art, English or any of the 40 majors at Lycoming, they are bolstered by an enriching liberal arts approach that allows them to be empathetic, creative and efficient mentors for their students. The program offers teaching certification in early childhood education, PreK-4; secondary education, 7-12 (biology, chemistry, English, math, physics and social studies), K-12 certification (art, modern languages and music); and special education as a dual certification, PreK-8 or 7-12. Students gain valuable experience at the College’s on-campus pre-school or at dozens of schools located in the community.

Business majors at Lycoming are educated in a multitude of business and management functions, including banking, financial services, small business management, marketing, sales, advertising, retailing, management, investments, human resources, organizational development, entrepreneurship and management information systems. Students in the program learn to become leaders, to think critically and to write and communicate clearly, and Lycoming can help place students in internships for real-world experiences prior to graduation.

Deeply rooted in the liberal arts tradition, Lycoming exposes students to the breadth of human knowledge and seeks to instill a love of learning and develop a capacity for critical inquiry. Coupled with exceptional teaching and opportunities for internships, research and global travel, the College offers a 21st-century education that prepares them for the workforce or for post-graduate pursuits.

“We are ecstatic to celebrate Lycoming College for its exceptional commitment to student success,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “Building upon its extensive liberal arts curriculum, as well as its impressive engagement of high-impact practices, Lycoming continues to stand out through its stance as a leader in education.”

“These new Field of Study honors from Colleges of Distinction are a testament to the value placed on teaching at Lycoming College,” said Philip Sprunger, Ph.D., provost and dean of Lycoming College. “Lycoming will continue to place a heavy emphasis on teaching and providing the experiential opportunities that enable its students to make the most of their College years, as well as launch them into successful and meaningful careers.”
