Lycoming College announced today that it has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media for the second year in a row. Military Friendly® Schools is the most comprehensive resource for veterans today helping service members and their families select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

“We believe that veterans increasingly recognize Lycoming as a place where they can merge their own service experience with our exemplary 21st-century liberal arts education to forge lives of meaning and careers of significance,” said Kent C. Trachte, Ph.D., president of Lycoming College. “Further, our service veterans and our military family members are a crucial part of Lycoming’s diverse campus community, and they bring to bear experiences that further engender cross-cultural understanding across our student body.”

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation.

“I have been in the United States Army Reserves for four years so far and I wouldn’t change it for anything — I love what I do,” said Kaitlin M. Howey, a specialist in the Army Reserves and a senior criminal justice major from Easton, Pa. “Lycoming helped me meet the challenges of being a college student while serving in the military. Although at times it’s tough, Lycoming’s staff has provided an immense amount of support for me and all of us who serve.”

Ratings methodology, criteria and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

Lycoming College also hosts Army ROTC as part of U.S. Army Cadet Command’s Bison Battalion, which also includes students from the Pennsylvania College of Technology, Susquehanna University, Bloomsburg University and host campus Bucknell University. The Bison Battalion has won the MacArthur Award five times in the past 10 years, while Lycoming College specifically has been ranked as a “Best Eastern Region Small School” by U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Ky. Army ROTC is the country’s broadest and most successful collegiate leadership program; upon completion, students are commissioned as second lieutenants in the active-duty Army, Army Reserves or the Army National Guard.

“This distinction further validates my opinion that our Army’s young leaders are well-served by the type of liberal arts education they receive at Lycoming College,” said Philip Sprunger, Ph.D, provost at Lycoming. “The Army ROTC cadets who earn their commission at Lycoming possess the communication and critical thinking skills that are highly valued both by their senior officers and by the soldiers they will be trusted to lead.”

According to Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer at Victory Media, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”
