Five Lycoming College biology students and three faculty participated in the 84th Annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science held April 4-6. Dr. Mel Zimmerman, professor of biology and director of the Clean Water Institute, chaired the aquatic ecology oral presentation session. Dr. Mary Morrison, assistant professor of biology, chaired a poster session on organismal biology. At the meeting, Dr. Peter Petokas, research associate with the Clean Water Institute, was voted co-chair of the PAS newsletter for 2008-09 and Zimmerman was appointed member of the green committee.
Lycoming papers presented at the meeting were:
Jennie Yuda, a senior biology major, worked with Zimmerman on a research project titled “Analysis of a Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) or Total Nitrogen and Solids Removal from Wastewater.”
Brent Hile, a junior biology major, worked with Petokas on a research poster titled “External Physical Characteristics and Health Condition of Eastern Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis) in North Central Pennsylvania.”
Nicole Rhodes, a senior biology major, worked with Zimmerman on a research poster titled “Post Restoration Evaluation of a Natural Stream Channel Design Project (Big Bear Creek, Lycoming County, Pa.).”
Peter Via, a senior biology major, worked with Morrison on a research poster titled “Refining the PCR Genotyping Procedure for Mice Carrying the TRKB Mutant Allele for Future use in Breeding Study Dendrite Development in the Purkinje Neurons of Homozygous Mutant Mouse Cerebellum.”
Chanelle Horst, a senior biology major, with Morrison on a research poster titled “Is DCC/Netrin Signaling Necessary for Purkinje Neuron Development.”
