Learn all about rocks, geology and volcanoes in Vulcanology; look into the past and examine fascinating fossils in Paleontology; study the mysteries of the deep oceans in Oceanography, and then examine the living world around us in Biology. (Science/Grades: 2-3, Period 1 and Period 2.)

Be a Budding Botanist! – What has a skeleton but no bones? Here’s a hint: Your project swill use materials from your biggest friends, the trees. Come have fun spatter painting, sawing, exploring and collecting. Learn about "tree cookie sand a drink that many people wrongly think is poisonous, and then make wearable tree art. Take a field trip and discover what a good nature detective you are. (Tell us on the first day if you have guessed where a botanist would find a skeleton!)  (Science/Grades: 2-3, Period 2.)

A Sense of Wonder – This class explores the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. Students visit a variety of places that help them explore a specific sense and learn what it would be like if their senses were lost. (Science/Grades: 2-3, Period 1.)

GRADES 3-4

Timberrrr! – Lumberjacks called this warning and soon the boom rats went into action. Who were they and how did they risk their lives? Take field trips, make creative projects with wood, (a little sawing) and with paint, and with nature’s treasurers. See petrified wood and learn scientific names in Latin. Taste Native American lemonade. This is dendrology with local history and fun! (Science/Grades: 3-4, Period 1.)

Young Musicians – Explore different types of music in this introductory class. Strengthen your listening skills while learning about music and the world around you in new ways. (Art/Grades: 3-4, Period 2.)

Junior Rangers – Become a zoologist as you research animals and where they live. Find out how animals have adapted to their environments and the role that humans play in protecting those habitats. You'll become familiar with many species of wildlife as you learn about such places as wetlands, dry lands and woodlands. You'll also explore our environment on nature hunts, by investigating soil, and cleaning up an actual oil spill. You’ll be invited to bring an unusual pet to class one day. You'll enjoy hands-on lessons including making plaster casts of paw prints, growing soil grass heads and edible mud pies, leaf-print T-shirts, exploding volcanoes, study animal prints, pelts, scat, skulls, jaws and claws, movies, crafts and puzzles on the animal theme, taking home animal lesson books and so much more. (Science/Grades: 3-4, Period 1 and Period 2.)

Lego Maniacs – Did you know that shovels, wheelbarrows, hockey sticks and wooden bats are all simple machines called levers? Simple machines make work easier by enabling us to decrease our effort to move objects. The six types of simple machines are often combined into complex machines. Come learn about the types of simple machines and create some original machine designs of your own using Legos. Add the concept of motorization in this extremely hands-on and independent class. A 9-volt motor enables students to bring their projects to life. Through the building of realistic motorized models, students develop a strong understanding of mechanical principles. This class is limited to 10 students. (Science/Grades 3-4, Period 1 and 2.)

Harry’s Wizards Workshop – In this class, you'll receive instruction in a skill, just like your favorite literary character, Harry Potter, does at Hogwarts. The first step is to divide into houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. Students also will make their own wand. You'll learn that "magic" really has its roots in the natural sciences such as chemistry, optics and physics. (Science & Art/Grades: 3-4, Period 1.)

Hagrid's Mystical Creatures – Harry Potter and the Hogwart's students always enjoyed learning about the creatures of the wizarding world. We might find bowtruckles around campus; learn how to rid your garden of pesky gnomes, compare pixies and fairies, and raise miniature dragon eggs. We'll learn about the facts and myths of these amazing creatures and even make some of our own to take home! A great follow-up class for the Harry's Wizards Workshop lovers.(Science & Art/Grades: 3-4, Period 2.)

GRADES 4-5

Global Art – Did you know that the Huichol Indians of Central America used beeswax warmed in the sun to create elaborate yarn paintings? Did you know that Australian aborigines created rock wall and bark paintings to show the “dream time?” That the Senufo of Africa created paint out of mud and leaves? That the Japanese made prints from the fish they caught to prove the size of their catch? From the beginning of time, cultures the world over have used art in many ways. Make these and other projects as we explore art from cultures all around the globe. (Art/Grades: 4-5, Period 1.)

CSI/Crime Scene Investigators – Whodunit and how did they do it? Crime scene investigations are fascinating places and the scientists who uncover the evidence are becoming the Super heroes of the 21st century. Investigate the power of science and logical reasoning as you evaluate evidence to solve mysteries and crimes. Using the same equipment as forensic scientists, you will conduct a DNA experiment, apply the principles of chromatography, dust for fingerprints, and learn to crack secret codes. (Science/Grades: 4-5, Period 2.)

Grossology – That is so Gross! Experiment with ingredients and foods found at the grocery store to discover the chemical nature of substances, their properties, reactions and uses in daily life. Excite your curiosity with observation and hands-on experiments. This course is an excellent way to introduce you to the fundamentals of chemistry and laboratory procedures. From volcanoes to crystal gardens to edible experiments, Grossology promises to be an "egg-citing" time. (Science/Grades: 4-5, Period 1 and 2.)

Scrap-It I* – Discover the world of scrapbooking in this exciting, creative class. Not only will you learn about photo preservation, but you will complete your own scrapbook. By documenting your own life with photos, art and journal entries, you'll learn perspective as you review your entries and see which things are no longer important to them (think: The Spice Girls), and which things are (think: high grades in math). It is also a great way to preserve the importance of your friends, your family and your history. (Art/Grades: 4-5, Period 1 – Requires an additional $15 fee for supplies.)

Young Inventors – These are do-it-yourself hands-on science projects with a twist. We will investigate Cartesian divers and figure out how they work, build and launch water rockets, make batteries out of fruit and much more. Students will leverage their knowledge of forces, work, simple machines and conservation of energy to design and build Rube Goldberg machines and other complex contraptions to complete simple tasks. This is a hands-on class so students will be directly involved and use problem-solving skills. (Science/Grades: 4-5, Period 2.)
