Hi! My name is Denise Carlin and I am from Long Island. I can't believe I'm a senior and in my last year at Lyco. Graduating from high school with so many interests, I knew a liberal arts college would be the right choice for me. History has always been a passion for me and has become my major, but I am also adding a minor in world politics and a minor in Spanish.

I found Lycoming through a college fair in the fall of my senior year. After meeting with a representative, I went to campus for a visit and immediately felt at ease. I decided to apply and after being accepted, I stayed overnight in a freshman residence hall. I fell in love and knew that Lycoming was the right decision for me!

So, what to do with history, world politics, and Spanish? I'm thinking law school at this point. The pre-law program is perfect for students with diverse interests. Students studying pre-law can major in any academic area, however, political science, history and English are some of the most common. Through practice LSAT testing, availability of several LSAT testing guides, a pre-law prep course, and Dr. Whelan's immeasurable help, I am confident in my abilities to be an excellent student of law and a capable attorney.

Internships are an important component of a Lycoming education. I was fortunate to participate in two internships during my Lycoming College career. During my sophomore year, I interned at a law firm here in Williamsport. I was able to sit in on depositions, learn about briefs, and witness the research and preparation procedures that go into both civil and criminal cases. Then for the following two summers, I interned at The American Geographical Society in New York City doing multiple research projects pertaining to the history of the Society and its role in the history of the United States. I also worked on short-term projects as needed to market the Society's publications and activities.

In addition to my internships, I also traveled abroad to Barcelona, Spain during a May Term sponsored by the history department. My friends and I studied medieval history with Dr. Chandler (also my academic advisor). We spent a week in the classroom and then traveled throughout Barcelona for the rest of the month. We visited all of the historic sites and museums as well as explored the city, really getting a feel for the culture of Barcelona. We were able to visit a medieval monastery in Montserrat, explore the architecture of Antonio Gaudi, and see where the 1992 Olympics took place.

Whether it's going to my advisor to help me plan my schedule, meeting with top administrators to plan a campus event, or saying "hi" to the President of the College, the personal attention I receive has made my Lycoming experience unique. College gives you an education, but your professors and peers shape it. Come for a visit and if possible, an overnight stay. If Lycoming feels like a place you could call home for the next four years, go with that feeling; you won't regret it.
