Hi, my name is Jordan Hollander and I am an International Studies, Political Science, and French major from Branchburg, New Jersey.
During my college search, I knew that I wanted to go to a small, liberal arts school. I first heard about Lycoming at a local college fair, and as soon as I stepped foot on campus, I knew that Lyco was where I wanted to study. The college has a great atmosphere: small student population, friendly people, and great professors. At Lyco, you get to know your classmates and professors really well; you are not just a number in a giant lecture hall. Sometimes, professors will even invite their students to dinner at their houses.
It is really easy to get involved on campus. I sing in several different choirs, and I am a member of the French Club, the Political Science Club, College Republicans, and Pre-Law Society. I also participate in intramural sports and play varsity golf. There is a lot to do at Lyco, and you don't even need to leave campus to find activities. If you do, Williamsport has a lot of great coffee shops, restaurants, golf courses, stores, and two movie theaters.
I chose to major in International Studies because it gives me the opportunity to combine my love of politics and learning different languages. International Studies is an interdisciplinary field, and you get to take classes in several different departments, including political science, history, economics, and foreign languages (French, German, or Spanish). Dr. Larson, the program advisor is a great professor and really knowledgeable in the field.
Studying abroad is an important part of International Studies, and there are many opportunities to study in another country and get credit towards the major at Lyco. The college has affiliates in France, Spain, Germany, England, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Also, if there is a program that Lyco does not have an official affiliation with, you can still do it! In the summer of 2008, I studied at t Université Laval in Québec City, Canada. I took three classes, all in French. It was a great experience to live in another country, completely immersed in another language and culture and it was a great opportunity to apply what I have learned as an International Studies major and to expand on that knowledge. I had a great time and hope to study abroad again in the future.
After Lycoming, I hope to go to law school or to get a PhD in Political Science or International Studies. I know that Lycoming will have prepared me well for graduate school and for my future career. I hope that you will consider Lycoming College and being an International Studies major!
