Hi! My name is Danielle Crayton, and I am a senior Spanish major with a minor in American History currently working on my teaching certification in secondary education.
I chose to major in Spanish because I love learning about other languages and cultures and the Lyco Spanish profs are top notch. So how does my story fit into the education department webpage? At Lycoming, future teachers are required to take a major and additional teacher certification courses (including student-teaching). It's a busy schedule, but I know it will give me an edge when I start applying for jobs.
With the help of my Spanish and Education profs I have enjoyed some marvelous opportunities. Last year I studied in Salamanca, El Puerto de Santa Maria, and Madrid, Spain. I lived with three different host families and literally immersed myself in the Spanish culture by eating, sleeping and breathing Spanish! And if that wasn't enough I also attended classes to strengthen my Spanish speaking, writing, and comprehension skills. Studying and living abroad was truly amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It opened my eyes to a different way of life and culture outside of the U.S. This past summer I interned at the main campus of the Pennsylvania State University teaching within an enrichment program. The knowledge I gained will give me additional confidence in the classroom when I begin student-teaching.
During my college search I was looking for a small, liberal arts college that provided a valuable education. I also wanted a school that had plenty of opportunities to get involved on and off campus. When I visited Lycoming, I instantly fell in love with the campus!
It's been a great three years and I will hate to see it end. I have received a unique educational experience and have been able to build wonderful relationships with my professors and many friends.
