Courses

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a major program in mathematics and minor programs in computer science, computational science, and mathematics. Interested students may want to investigate the interdisciplinary actuarial mathematics major as well.

Early courses within the major such as Combinatorics, Calculus, and Statistics emphasize solving well-formulated problems and building a foundation of examples and techniques. Advanced courses such as Operations Research, Real Analysis, and Abstract Algebra deal more with problems, models, structures, and abstractions. In the student’s junior and senior year, majors sharpen their research and speaking skills by presenting new and exciting mathematical concepts to fellow students and faculty by means of seminars and the Math Colloquium.
