Snowden Library and Academic Information
Resources
Persons attending
conferences at Lycoming College may have access to the Snowden Library
resources under guidelines that are similar to those which apply to
community users.
The Snowden Library will be open in the summer when Lycoming classes are in
session from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The library may
be open only for Lycoming College students and faculty from 11:30a.m. to
1:30 p.m. and after 4:00 p.m. on certain days when academic information
staffing and security in the library are minimal. Library hours will be
posted on the front door.
Conference attendees have the use, within the library building, of all print
materials including reference books, newspapers, circulating books,
government documents and journals. There are no borrowing privileges unless
an individual qualifies under the normal community borrower's guidelines.
Limited reference service is available when an instructional services
librarian is at the reference desk. Extended reference service is not
provided. During the summer months instructional services librarians are
involved in extensive activities which include revision and updating of
teaching and class materials, computer and software upgrades and
installation, testing and setup of computers and new software and databases,
and other activities which support the teaching and curricular mission of
the College in preparation for the academic year. These activities have
priority.
Conference attendees have the use of the stand-up computer station dedicated
to accessing the Snowden Library book collection. Other computers in the
library may be used only if an instructional services librarian feels it is
appropriate for a specific reference need and directs the user to a the
community borrower sign-in at the circulation desk, where he or she can
receive a temporary login and password. Computer stations are not available
for non-academic information research functions such as chat rooms, general
surfing of the web, or for entertainment purposes.
Computer, Telephone, and Media Services
Computer lab use and their support is restricted to Lycoming College
personnel and students unless other arrangements are made with Information
Technology Services (ITS) at 321-4150 for their rental, pending
availability. Computer labs are open for May Term students from 8 a.m. - 4
p.m. Labs are closed for Summers 1 and 2 sessions unless previous
arrangements are made with the instructors.
Student lab monitors must be present during open lab hours. They are not
normally hired during the summer. Support for the computer facilities is not
available from full-time staff during these months while they are working on
various projects to prepare for the next academic year. This includes the
shutdown, installation, rebuilding, and upgrading of lab and network
equipment and software.
E-mail and network access accounts are provided only to staff and students.
Contact the Telecommunications office at 321-4074 to make arrangements for
the setup of special phone extensions and their billing at least two weeks
in advance.
Media Technology at 321-4083 has various audio-visual, satellite and
videoconference services available by advance reservation. There may be a
rental fee. A two weeks notice is usually required.
