| All Internet services can
be reached graphically from any of the labs and directly from all
residence halls on campus using ResNet.
Faculty, staff, and commuter students who have an account with a
commercial Internet provider in their home area can access
services graphically through the Internet as well.
Any questions concerning on-line services should be directed to
the System Administrator at 321 - 4160, IT Services’s Help Desk at 321 - 4150, or e-mail
at help@lycoming.edu.
Accounts
Internet accounts are available for all current students, faculty,
and staff. GroupWise is our easy to use, graphical e-mail
and scheduling program. All users now have the ability to
organize and schedule their daily, weekly, and monthly activities.
No longer will they need to buy an expensive day planner.
All meetings, tasks, and notes can be entered directly onto their
calendar or they can send a request for a meeting, an item to be
done, or a reminder note to another student(s), faculty or staff
member(s). Calendars can be printed in daily, weekly, and
monthly formats.
During orientation, freshman students receive their login ids
as well as training in the use of GroupWise and web browser.
Upperclassmen who do not have an account may obtain one by signing
up in the IT Services and taking a training workshop. Additional
classes in advanced features are scheduled throughout the year.
Faculty and staff are given accounts at the time of their hiring.
One-on-one training is available when planned workshops do not fit
their schedules.
Electronic Information Access Services
Through the information access initiatives of the IT Services, electronic
information services are available to all members of Lycoming
College. The Internet connects computers around the world,
enabling faculty, staff and students to access a vast collection
of on-line resources. Internet resources include information
such as library catalogs, research databases, electronic journals,
and discussion groups on research issues. Lycoming College's
computer users can access this information from their homes and
residence halls or from offices and computer labs directly.
Computer and communications technology is rapidly evolving.
Our staff are continually developing and enhancing system tools to
make access as easy as possible.
Electronic Mail
Electronic mail (e-mail) is information that you send
electronically from one computer user to another. Once you
learn the basics of the GroupWise (a windows based
mail/scheduler), you will find that e-mail is an easy and fun way
to communicate with friends and colleagues at Lycoming and around
the world.
Electronic Information on the World Wide Web
Information can be found on the World Wide Web (WWW). WWW
servers provide a network of information delivered in 'hypertext'
and 'hypermedia'. At this time, Internet Explorer 5.5 is
available for Lycoming's users.
All faculty and administrative departments have homepages.
After attending training, all students, faculty, and staff can
create their own homepages that are subject to review in
accordance to the college computer policy. Upperclassmen
have 2 megabytes of space available to them. New this year,
freshmen will have a network account with 20 megabytes of space to
store their web pages, e-mail, and other files such as
word-processing documents. Examples of homepages that can be
reached via the Lycoming College homepage include the library
catalog, personnel and student directories, and class information.
Electronic Newsgroup
Electronic news is an interactive electronic bulletin board
that displays thousands of newsgroups. These newsgroups
contain articles on almost any topic that you can imagine.
Because of their interactive nature, the newsgroups are an ideal
way to discuss various topics of interest with people around the
world. You can read articles, post your own ideas, and reply
publicly or privately. In many newsgroups, instructions for
procedures and lists of frequently asked questions (FAQs) are
posted for new users.
Lycoming College recommends using
groups.google.com
to access newsgroups.
File Transfer Protocol (ftp)
Anonymous FTP sites can be reached using LAN Workplace Pro.
It is used to retrieve files from public archives that are
scattered throughout the Internet. It is used to move files from
lab, ResNet, or office computers to update homepages on the Web
server.
Telnet Access
Telnet is used to log into other computers on the Internet.
It is used to access public services including library catalogs
and other databases. If the service is not public, you will
need to have an account on the system that you wish to log into.
Telnet is available through LAN Workplace Pro.
Access to Datatel utilizes the program LAN Workplace Pro.
Listserv Information
Listservs are used to send e-mail to a group of subscribed users
with like interests. We are using the Majordomo version of
listserv.
Faculty or administrative departments may request private
groups for classroom or professional use.
IntraNet Information
Lycoming College utilizes an Intranet for its staff/faculty that requires
the employee to sign the "Technology Access, Use and Policies"
form. Current information available are forms from Academic
Dean, Registrar, Treasurer and Snowden Library among others,
Calendars, Faculty and Administrative Handbooks, Budget report access
etc.
