Mumps outbreak
The largest mumps outbreak to hit the country in twenty years
started in the state of Iowa in December 2005. As of April 15, more
than 1000 suspected/confirmed cases of mumps in eight neighboring
states have been identified. The majority of cases are occurring in
individuals ages 18-25, many of whom are on college campuses. Many
of those individuals infected were not adequately vaccinate. Current
recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the
American College Health Association is two doses of the MMR
(measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. In Pennsylvania, as of May 4,
eight confirmed cases of mumps have been identified in five
counties. Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection. Symptoms
include body aches, fatigue, headache, fever and swelling of the
parotid or other salivary glands (although 20% of cases are without
symptoms and another 50% are associated with non-specific
respiratory symptoms). Complications are more common in adults than
children and include deafness, inflammation of the testicles,
breasts, and ovaries, pancreatitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and
spontaneous abortion.
