What does a Service Scholar do?
Service Scholars are selected annually based on an application process. Once chosen, each scholar will receive a scholarship award. They must work six hours per week throughout the academic year and maintain a 2.5 grade point average and an evaluation will be done at the end of the student's term of service for the awarding of the scholarship for the following year. The student scholar works under the supervision of Lycoming's Community Service Director, Jeff LeCrone.
What are the responsibilities of a Service Scholar?
The service scholar must maintain a record of good citizenship and adequately fulfill the responsibilities of the Service Scholar position. He/she must participate in leadership development opportunities such as the freshman Leadership Education Advancement Project (L.E.A.P.), student leadership retreat, Pennsylvania Campus Compact workshops, conferences, and college paraprofessional groups. The service scholar must also participate in the Lycoming community service class. And he/she should assist with the coordination and administration of the Community Service Center and provide oversight for the development of community, volunteer, and service learning opportunities for Lycoming students.

"Being a service scholar has allowed me to develop a program that meets two causes. One, giving Lyco students the chance to teach the youth of Williamsport every Sunday morning at local churches, and second, giving the youth a chance to spend time with outstanding Lycoming College role models."
- Jason Moran, former scholar
"Community service means opening up myself to the opportunities present in the community to lend a helping hand and improve the well being of the individuals lives around me, and also to be a mentor, a friend, and a helper who makes an impact."
- Dina Borishkevich
"Community Service is very important to me. I always loved volunteering in high school so it was natural for me to continue doing so in college. I know that I have made an impact in my home town, and I would like to do so in Williamsport as well."
- Jordan Snyder
"I believe that community service and the belief in assisting people in need are genuine desires that are universal to all individuals. To give anything less than service and to show anything less than compassion to the world would be sacrificing a wonderful gift. Thus, I believe that in embracing community service we not only enrich our own lives, but the lives of countless others around us."
- Nicholas Tomaskovic
"Community Service is a very important aspect in many different people's lives whether they are affected by a service project, involved in a fulfilling service activity, or simply being there to lend a hand to those in need. Being a Service Scholar has allowed me to continue to pursue my desire to work with various people in the world surrounding me and to make a difference in another's life."
- Amber Nace
"Community Service is not just about helping out the community. To me Community Service is about bettering myself as a person. I have also been participating in Community Service either with my high school or in 4-H, and want to continue while at College. Community Service should help as many people as possible. The projects can inspire and open the eyes of people all over. I hope my involvement as a Community Service Scholar will help to better my life and the lives of others."
-Justine Bush
"Community Service is important because you're impacting the lives of others. I've always enjoyed volunteering my time because knowing that I've helped someone in need is very self-fulfilling. When I serve for others, I just feel good...and that's what life's all about!"
-Alison Clark
"I started volunteering at a young age and as the years go on I see myself maturing so much because I am bettering myself by helping others. I think everyone should take a little time out to do community service. The fact that you are improving so many lives makes you feel proud of who you are. You can make a huge difference by just helping out a little."
-Natalie Johnson
"Community Service accentuates how one shows compassion for a neighbor or friend. It is more important that someone contributes to the community than by how they do it. Community Service gives me the realization that I can change the world, one day at a time.”
-Jordan Krebs
"Community service gives the me the chance to have new experiences, learn new things and make new friends; while giving me the satisfication of helping others."
