Tracks and Courses

The Department of Chemistry offers both Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees. All chemistry majors take a core set of courses which includes General Chemistry I-II, Organic Chemistry I-II, Physcial Chemistry I-II, Analytical Chemistry and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Physics I-II, and Calculus with Analytic Geometry I-II. All majors must complete a Capstone course in Chemistry, which can be one of four options: Honors Project, Chemistry Research Methods, Internship, or the Professional Semester in Education (Student Teaching).

Students planning to attend graduate school or work in industry tend to pursue the B.S. degree, which requires three courses beyond the core set. These include at least two higher level chemistry courses and may include one course in math, biology, or physics. The B.A. degree requires only the core set of courses, offering more flexibility for future teachers and students with double majors.
