1) Possible essay / short answer type questions: Chapter 17 Review Questions 8 -
18 (page 763).
2) Be able to work problems involving Gibbs Free Energy and spontaneous change.
Problems 29, 30 and 33 are essentially additional Review Questions. Problems 34
and 36 consider the contributions of enthalpy (ÿH°) and entropy (ÿS°) to the
Gibbs Free Energy (ÿG°), especially what makes it spontaneous (negative) or
no-spontaneous (positive) for a process or reaction as written.
3) Be able to work problems calculating the standard Gibbs Free Energy for a
process or reaction. One way is from the Gibbs Free Energies of Formation (the
sum of products times their stoichiometric numbers minus the sum of reactants
times their stoichiometric numbers, Problem 37). Another way is to calculate
enthalpy (ÿH°) and entropy (ÿS°) changes and then ÿG° (Problem 40). Problem 41
is essentially an additional Review Question.
4) Be able to relate the Gibbs Free Energy Change and the Equilibrium constant.
This often involves first calculating the Gibbs Free Energy Change and then
finding the Equilibrium constant from it (or vice versa). Problems are 45 (this
uses Trouton’s Rule), 47, 51, 55, and 58.
5) Be able to calculate how the Gibbs Free Energy Change and the Equilibrium
constant change as a function of temperature. Problems are 60, 61 (Clausius-Clapeyron),
63, and 67.
