Location

Bamberg is situated in northern Bavaria, but is actually part of Franconia, an important cultural and historical difference. This charming, picturesque, and safe - Bamberg boasts an extremely low crime rate - medieval city is home to the Otto-Friedrich-Universität, whose 12,500 students (700 international students)  attend classes led by a faculty that numbers around 170. Bamberg's central location allows easy train and bus access to Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, with the city of Nürnberg within even easier reach. Its proximity to the Alps appeals to hikers, skiers, and Sound of Music fans.

Bamberg's cultural life is rich with music, literature, and gastronomical pleasures. It is home to an acclaimed symphony orchestra, and was a longtime home to the great Romantic author E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), whose former residence now serves as a Hoffmann museum and society dedicated to the preservation and promotion of his work. The E.T.A.-Hoffmann-Theater, where Hoffmann worked in various capacities, is still active and offers a full program of classic and contemporary theater. Bamberg's architecture includes a beautiful 11th century cathedral and numerous other medieval structures, as well as buildings representing every period of European architecture. The beer culture of Bamberg is unique: Many of its beers are smoked, and the city boasts numerous beer gardens where students and locals can mingle on warm evenings.

Student Body

As one of the highest-rated universities in Germany, Bamberg boasts a student population that ranks among the most motivated and successful in several fields, most notably German Studies, Psychology, and Business. Most of its students are German, and they come from all over the country.
