Christy Bowersox in Cuernavaca, Mexico
My volunteer position was as a House Volunteer. House volunteers have a variety of responsibilities including: giving tours of local cathedrals and helping keep track of participants, as well as, setting tables, drying dishes, and restocking sodas. In the seven weeks I spent in Mexico I had the opportunity to travel (all travel was with the Centre and free/reduced for volunteers). I visited two pyramid sites while in Mexico: Xochicalco and Teopanzolco. Xochicalco was the most amazing site because of its size and its underground tunnels which lead to an observatory where priests and astronomers studied the stars. I also visited Taxco which is well-know for its high quality silver, Tepotzlan where I gave tours of the cathedral, Toluca which has a botanical garden with amazing stained-glass, and Cuernavaca where I gave tours of the cathedral and visited the Cortes Palace. My favorite trip was to Angangueo to see the Monarch butterfly migration. As soon as we arrived at the sanctuary and began walking up the trail one could see hundreds of butterflies. As we made our way higher and into dense pine one could see and hear thousands of butterflies flying around or resting in huge clumps in the trees. It was incredible!
