Environmental Education

Ever since the first Earth Day in 1970, the American public has been increasingly concerned about the quality of the environment.  Even though progress has been made in abatement and conservation, many issues, such as population growth and resource allocation still haunt our country. Many people believe that that key to solving these problems lies in the youth. Environmental education offers an opportunity to encourage problem-solving skills and awaken concern and enthusiasm for the welfare of the natural world. Although this is slowly being implemented into public and private curricula, the main form of environmental education today is taking place in summer camps. Shaver's Creek Environmental Center and Riverbend Environmental Education Center are two facilities that offer environmental summer camp programs.  These two centers also provide internship programs for college students interested in environmental education learning experiences.
