Into our third century

Lycoming College – one of the 50 oldest institutions of higher education in the United States – is commemorating its bicentennial during the 2011-12 academic year through events, stories and images exploring its tradition-rich, 200-year history.

The College was founded in 1812 as the Williamsport Academy, a school serving a small but thriving lumber community.

In 1848, the academy became Williamsport Dickinson Seminary – a preparatory school for Dickinson College. Then, in 1929, the seminary opened as Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College, Pennsylvania’s first accredited private two-year school. Finally, in 1947, the institution became a four-year college of the liberal arts and sciences with a new name – Lycoming College.

We invite you to celebrate Lycoming's bicentennial with a look at the people, places and memorable moments of the last two centuries.
