Final Blog Entry - Saturday at 5:43 p.m.

The 21st Annual Budd Whitehill National Duals are now officially in the books and once again we have been treated to some of the finest collegiate wrestling that Division III has to offer.

Wisconsin-Whitewater flexed its muscle in the championship match, defeating Ithaca 23-15 and claiming the title in a tightly contested bout. Congratulations to the Warhawks. Two things I noticed this weekend about them... one being that the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds (Austin Bautista) is not planning on losing anytime soon. Also, an outstanding effort from the 184 pounder, Sean Pietrzyk, who pinned all five of his opponents this weekend.

John Carroll defeated a banged up Lycoming team in the fifth-place match. The Warriors rested many of their top lineup after competing in four matches in two days prior to the fifth-place match. Still a nice showing for Lycoming, entering the tournament seeded sixth and finishing according to its seed.

Springfield turned heads all tournament and did so again in the seventh-place match, defeating Messiah. The Pride took down two ranked opponents today and will surely get some looks in the next national rankings for their effort.

After over 24 hours of sitting at this table in the gym over the last two days, I can say I'm finally wrestled out. I hope you all enjoyed this "fun" way of following along with the tournament. Feel free to send along any input as to how you think we could make it better in the future. I'm always up for improving!

Finally, I wish the safest of travels to all the teams and fans attending the tournament today. It took an extreme dedication to the sport for those folks to come out during the storm. I guess that says something about wrestling and its fans. An extra dash of safe travels to Whitewater, who took a 16 hour bus ride to get here and will surely have a long ride home with the weather.

Thanks again for following along. We'll see you next year.

Live Blog - Saturday at 3:52 p.m.

Sorry about the gap in time from the last post... as matches are wrapping up coaches are hitting me with all sorts of requests for copies and final results so they can try to get out before the storm gets worse.

Anyway, brackets are updated up to the final round, including the third-place match that was won by TCNJ.

Some exciting things in the final challenge bracket round. RIT and King's tied with a score of 22-22, forcing us to use the official tournament tiebreaking rules as published in the NCAA wrestling rulebook. After the match was tied after the first five tiebreaks, we finally settled on RIT as the winner via criteria 12.6 of the rulebook, which is fewest amount of forfeits. Since King's forfeited one match and RIT none, RIT was deemed the winner.

Another shocker, Cortland (last season's champion), dropped both of its matches today. The Red Dragons were plagued by some injuries throughout the tournament, but it was still quite a shock to see the #17 team in the country drop two matches today. I'm sure they will recover and bounce back in time for the postseason.

We're in the final round right now with just three matches going. Whitewater and Ithaca for the title on mat one, Lycoming and John Carroll for fifth on mat two and Springfield and Messiah for seventh on mat three. We're about midway through the round. Immediately after the match I will post the final brackets and results. Then I will be making copies and sending information to all the schools competing and local media before checking back for one final blog entry to wrap things up. I'll also be writing an "official" release chronicling Lycoming's performance today.

One more shoutout to Tim Weigle, who works here at Lycoming in Buildings and Grounds. Tim wrote in to say that he is enjoying reading along since he is home with his two beautiful little girls and wouldn't dare bring them out in this weather. Enjoy the comforts of home and that giant HD television of yours Tim.

Feel free to write in with any thoughts or notes for the final wrapup. (holtz@lycoming.edu)

Live Blog - Saturday at 2:23 p.m.

We're winding down inside and the snow is picking up outside. The last round of challenge matches are on the mats right now and will be followed by the championship round.

In the last round, Lycoming defeated Messiah and John Carroll defeated Springfield to advance to the fifth-place match. Springfield and Messiah will wrestle for seventh.

The championship round is set to start at 3 p.m. and will be immediately followed by an awards presentation.

The title match should be a good one, as we'll see the #5 team in the country (Whitewater) and the #8 team in the country (Ithaca) on the center stage. Whitewater's Anthony Bautista has to be the front-runner for the most outstanding performance of the tournament. Ranked first in the nation at 141 pounds, he has cruised through the tournament in impressive fashion.

A few more shoutouts along the way, as Broderick Gin, father of Craig, wrote in to say how excited he was to hear of his son winning his 100th career match. Also, Katie DeBias, a student at Wilkes, wrote in to say that she never misses her boyfriend's matches but could not make the trip today. I'm glad you're able to follow along Katie.

Thanks for writing in and feel free to keep the notes coming (holtz@lycoming.edu)

I'll check back with an update before the championship round finishes.

Live Blog - Saturday at 12:57 p.m.

The semi-finals are over and we have a true championship match on the horizon as top seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater will take on second seed Ithaca in the finals.

The Warhawks are ranked fifth in the nation and the Bombers are ranked eighth. It should be everything we could hope for in the championship match.

Some news and notes from the tournament... Lycoming and Messiah are in mid-match right now, as are Springfield and John Carroll. The winners of those matches will advance to the fifth-place match, with the losers dropping to the seventh-place match.

Messiah's Craig Gin, who had family members write in yesterday, just picked up his 100th career victory. Congratulations to Craig.

The third-place match between TCNJ and Wilkes will be moved up from 3:00 p.m. to 1:30 and wrestled downstairs on mat five. That move was agreed on by the coaches in hopes of avoiding the worst of the storm, expected to get heavier around 5:00 p.m.

Thanks to Todd Whitehill, Budd's son, for writing in to say he is enjoying following along with the duals. Also thanks to Lucy, who is the grandmother of Chris Dahlheimer, for writing in and following along. Thanks for the kind words, both of you.

This round of matches will be followed by four matches in the challenge brackets, closing out the challenge competition. The finals round is set for 3 p.m. (with the exception of the third-place match).

I'll check back in after this round finishes. Keep the notes coming to holtz@lycoming.edu

Live Blog - Saturday at 11:28 a.m.

The snow is coming down outside but things are just heating up inside Lamade Gymnasium today.

In the first round of the day, Messiah defeated RIT and Lycoming defeated King's secure at least a top-eight finish. Also securing a top-eight placing was Springfield after upsetting Cortland and John Carroll after defeating York.

The semi-finals are on the mats right now and the stands are a lot more filled than I thought they would be with this winter storm blowing through the state.

Thanks to Greg Barger, father of Lycoming wrestler Tom Barger, for checking in today. He said he planned to make the trip to Williamsport today but got snowed in back in Clearfield. Enjoy the updates and stay out of the snow Greg.

I'll be back after the semi-finals with an another update.

In the meantime, keep the e-mails coming to holtz@lycoming.edu

Welcome back to Lamade Gymnasium for the second day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals.

Our first round of matches (round G) is on the mats already. Messiah and RIT one mat one, Lycoming and King's on mat two, Springfield and Cortland on mat three and York and John Carroll on mat four.

At 10:30 we will have the semi-final round, with Whitewater and TCNJ on mat one and Wilkes and Ithaca on mat two.

I'll be here all day, punching in results, updating the brackets and writing some notes for the fans at home to follow along with.

After each round, I'll update the links on the right side with an updated bracket and updated individual result. I'll also post the time of each update to give you an idea of where we are in the schedule.

Goodnight!

Live Blog - Friday at 7:38 p.m.

Well, the last matches of the championship bracket are in the books for the day. The bracket, which says final day one above, is completed.

There are two matches remaining that are in progress as we speak, and these matches are part of the challenge bracket. The challenge bracket exists so teams that have been eliminated from the championship bracket with two losses can still have the chance to wrestle throughout the tournament.

The first round of challenge bracket matches are Baldwin-Wallace and Thiel on mat one and Case Western and Muskingum on mat two. These will be the final two matches of the evening.

The crowd has dwindled down and most of the teams have departed for their respective hotels to get dinner and rest up for tomorrow. Despite the smaller crowd, the temperature in the gym seems to be hovering at a constant 80-something degrees. I've been cherishing the escapes to the hallway where it feels like it is 30 degrees cooler.

When it's all said and done today, I will have sat here at this table for right around 13 hours. What the folks in the stands may not understand is how much effort goes into putting an event like this on. Roger Crebs and his staff are still running around assisting other coaches and teams, the trainers and their student-workers have been patrolling the gym in rubber gloves for what is working on 14 hours straight right now. It's amazing to see people come together to put on such a great event and it's easy to see how much the wrestlers and coaches appreciate this great tradition.

One quick shoutout, as Dave Jurczak from Detroit wrote in to tell me how much he has appreciated reading along. Dave is the father of one of the wrestler's on John Carroll's team. Thanks for the kind words Dave.

Well, Muskingum just beat Case Western 30-18 so I am off to write the results up. I'll check back with a final post before tearing down. Feel free to keep the e-mails flowing in at holtz@lycoming.edu

Live Blog - Friday at 5:48 p.m.

The packed crowd that showed up for the seeded round got their money's worth.

Wisconsin-Whitewater is looking like every bit of the fifth ranked team in the country, handling all three of their matches with ease today. The Warhawks defeated York 30-9 to advance to the semi-finals. The lone "upset" of the tournament also came in the last round when TCNJ defeated Cortland in the closest match of the day, squeeking by with a 19-18 win. They will face Whitewater in the semis tomorrow.

Chris Dahlheimer of Lycoming wrestles Richard Sparks of Wilkes. Dahlheimer won the match 5-1.On the bottom half of the bracket, Wilkes capitalized on two early wins and held on for a 20-15 win against Lycoming. Ithaca proved that they are determined to return to the finals, downing Messiah 37-6. The Bombers will take on Wilkes in the semis.

The next round of the left side of the bracket is on the mats now, and will be followed by two matches in the challenge bracket at 7 p.m. to wrap up competition on day one.

A few more notes pouring into the e-mail inbox... Joe Venniro, the associate director of sports information at RIT, informed me that Mike McInally is now a perfect 14-0 this season at125 pounds after his two wins today.

Also, Geoff Henson checked in from Olivet College to say they he is enjoying reading along with our duals, even though his team is competing in Iowa this weekend at the National Duals. Geoff is a Baldwin-Wallace grad and says he has always enjoyed the Whitehills.

Well, it's just about 6:00 now and I have been in here for right on 10 hours now today. The trainers have me beat, as they were here by 6:00 a.m. for skin checks and weigh-ins. A few more hours and I think there are a few Lycoming staffers that will be sleeping like babies!

Keep the notes and messages coming (they're helping me stay alert!) to holtz@lycoming.edu.

I'll check back after this round (and maybe something to eat!).

Live Blog - Friday at 4:07 p.m.

Well it's just past four (which means I have been in this gym for over eight hours straight) and the National Wrestling Coaches Association is showing us how accurately they rank the teams in Division III. All of the top eight seeds in the tournament cruised into Round E and we have a truly-tournament setting right now.

No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater vs. No. 8 York on mat one. No.4 Cortland vs. No.5 TCNJ on mat two. No.3 Wilkes vs. No.6 Lycoming on mat three and No.2 Ithaca vs. No.7 Messiah on mat four.

The stands are as packed as they have been all day (quite a nice crowd all day). Hopefully this nasty storm people are talking about will decide to skip Williamsport tonight so we can keep these crowds throughout tomorrow.

The last round saw the closest match of the day so far when RIT defeated Thiel 22-19 in round D. All the losers of round D will drop the "Challenge Bracket" to allow the teams the chance to keep wrestling and getting in more matches.

A few shoutouts to some loyal fans. The father and son combo of Broderick and Matt Gin wrote in to send a nice word and let me know they are following along. Matt's younger brother is wrestling here for Messiah today.

Also, Joe DeBenedictis, the SID at Hunter, wrote in to say he has been reading along but now has to host a basketball double-header. He informed me that Hunter's 133 pounder's loss today was his first all season and that his heavyweight made a return to wrestling this weekend having not competed since 2007.

Thanks for the notes and for checking in (holtz@lycoming.edu). Keep the info coming!

I'll be back after this "seeded" round finishes.

Live Blog - Friday at 2:33 p.m.

Well another round is in the books and still no major surprises as each of the top-four seeds have advanced. Top-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater easily handled Oswego (37-3), second seed Ithaca defeated Hunter (33-9), third seed Wilkes had a close match, but prevailed against John Carroll (25-14) and fourth seed Cortland defeated Norwich (30-9).

The first round of the losing side of the bracket is on the mats now (D1 to D4 if you're following along at home). Next up will be the showdown of all top-eight seeds in round E, set to start at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors will face Wilkes in the No.6 - No.3 matchup.

A quick shoutout to Christian Anderson, the SID at Norwich. Christian e-mailed in to say that he has been feverishly checking the site. Christian and I have a connection, as we both started our full-time professional careers at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Thanks for checking in and thanks for the kind words Christian.

Keep writing (holtz@lycoming.edu) in and checking for updates throughout the day. I'll be back with more updates after the next round.

Live Blog - Friday at 1:10 p.m.

Thanks for checking into Whitehill Central throughout this year's tournament. If you haven't noticed already, I'll be updating the bracket and individual results after each match finishes (as fast as I can type them all in anyway). You can access the latest information via the links above.

After the first two rounds, the seeding has held to form with all of the top-eight seeds advancing to the next round. We're in the middle of the third round right now, with each of the top-four seeds wrestling their second matches of the day.

Lycoming escaped Springfield in the opening round with an 18-13 win, which excited head coach Roger Crebs, who thought the match would be tight when looking at the pairings. The Warriors will take on the winner of the Wilkes and John Carroll match (going on right now) at 3:30 p.m.

I'm going to try to grab something to eat quick and then I'll be updating the third round matches and posting the bracket and results.

Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at holtz@lycoming.edu with any questions, comments, or just to say hello.

I'll check back in later.
