HOBOKEN, N.J. - Lycoming's wrestling team (10-5) originally fell to Stevens Institute of Technology (7-3) by a team score of 20-17. Leading 17-10 after seven bouts, Ducks' freshman Justin Galati scored a 5-2 decision over Warrior Bryan Kopesky (Phillipsburg, N.J.) at 184 pounds to help Stevens hold off 25th-ranked Lycoming. However, Galati was disqualified after the match, giving the Warriors a 23-17 win.
To open the match, Lycoming freshman Walker Faison (Virginia Beach, Va.) pinned sophomore Kyle Brisson at 125 pounds, but the blue and gold dropped four straight bouts before 165-pound sophomore Chris Dahlheimer (Felton, Pa.) cut the Warriors' deficit to four points with a 12-1 major decision against Jordan Chacon.
At 174, fourth-ranked senior Brandon MacWhinnie got a vital five points for the Ducks with a 16-0 technical fall against sophomore Justin Waycaster (Watsontown, Pa.).
Galati then took down Kopesky twice in the third period to finish Stevens' scoring. Lycoming senior Troy Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) scored a major decision at 197, leaving senior Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa.) to try to score a pin at heavyweight. Miller, who normally wrestles 197 moved up a weight class to try for a pin and the team tie, but Miller only scored a 7-0 decision against James Roarty.
The Warriors return to action on Valentine's Day at 7 p.m. against Elizabethtown in Lamade Gymnasium. The match will be the final contest of the season for Lycoming. The NCAA national qualifier is on Feb. 23 in Oneonta, N.Y.
