WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming’s wrestling team defeated conference foe Messiah on Friday by a score of 26-17. The Warriors are #13 in the nation, while Messiah stands at #23 in the most recent InterMat.com national rankings.
Lycoming freshman Noel Faison (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped to a quick 11-0 lead before pinning Bryce Stever at 2:18 in the 125-pound bout. With the overall score at 6-3, Warrior freshman Tom Barger (Clearfield, Pa.) won by fall at 4:40 to put Lycoming up 12-3.
But the Falcons battled back, winning a major decision at 149 pounds and a decision at 157. Warrior sophomore Chris Dahlheimer (Felton, Pa.), who is
7-1 in dual matches this year, took a 6-3 decision over nationally-ranked Trent Zempel at 165 pounds to keep Lycoming ahead 15-10.
After Messiah won a major decision at 174, Falcon junior Nathan Deisem put his team up 17-15 with a 6-0 decision at 184 pounds. But Lycoming’s Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa.), who is ranked 8th in the country at 197 pounds, won by technical fall at 5:26 to swing the balance to the Warriors, 20-17.
In the evening’s final bout, senior Troy Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) preserved the Lycoming victory by pinning Dando Speers at 2:26 in the first period.
The Warriors were previously ranked 29th by InterMat.com, but rose to 13th in the Jan. 15 rankings after placing 4th at the Budd Whitehill National Duals held in Williamsport last weekend.
