Lycoming senior Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa./Montgomery) won the 197-pound national championship by defeating defending national-champ T.J. Miller of Wartburg 2-0 in the finals of the 2008 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Matt Miller executed a first period takedown and rode out the second period with determination. T.J. Miller regained riding time by maintaining the top position in the third period, but could not turn Matt Miller to score points.
Going into the tournament, T.J. Miller was the No. 1 seed and ranked first in the nation by Brute/Adidas. Matt Miller was seeded sixth and ranked sixth. Matt Miller finishes his Lycoming career with a perfect 20-0 record in his senior season and his first national championship.
Earlier on Saturday, Miller decisioned No. 7 seed Josh Holferty of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by a score of 3-0 in the semi-finals. T.J. Miller reached the finals by beating Craig Bollig of UW-Stevens 3-1 in the semis.
All of the aformentioned wrestlers walked in the Parade of All-Americans prior to the finals. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class are recognized as NCAA All-Americans... but only one is the National Champion! Congratulations Matt!
Lycoming's last national champion was the Warriors' all-time wins leader Royce Eyer, who took first at 157 pounds in the 2001 NCAA DIII Championships.

Lycoming senior Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa./Montgomery) defeated No. 3 seed Paul Hartt in the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships by a score of 6-1 on Friday night. The win guarantees Miller All-American status and makes him the third-highest seed of the four remaining. Miller is the original No. 6 seed
Miller's next opponent will be No. 7 seed Josh Holferty of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, who beat No. 2 Alec Bonander of Luther 5-2 in the quarter-finals. No. 1 seed and returning champion T.J. Miller of Wartburg will wrestle No. 4 seed Craig Bollig of UW-Stevens in the other semi-final.
The semi-finals begin tomorrow before noon, with the Parade of All-Americans at 7:30 p.m. (eastern time) and the finals beginning at 8 p.m.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Lycoming senior 197-pound wrestler Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa./Montgomery) won a
3-1 decision over Delaware Valley's Joe West in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday afternoon. Miller, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, advances to the quarterfinals, which are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. (eastern time) on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Center.
In the quarter-finals, Miller will wrestle No. 3 seed Paul Hartt of Lakeland, who pinned his opponent at 6:00 in the opening round.
