WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team battled back from being down two games but could not overcome Wilkes University, dropping a 3-1 decision on Monday night, Sept. 15, at Lamade Gymnasium.
The Lady Warriors (7-5) lost the first two sets by scores of 25-22 in each, but battled back with a convincing 25-18 win in the third set.
It looked as if Lycoming would force a decisive fifth set when the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 19-10 lead in the fourth set, but the Colonels (4-3) stormed back into the game with a 15-4 run to seal with 25-23 win.
Senior Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) continued her hot streak, leading the team with a season-high 15 kills on 37 attempts for a .323 hitting percentage. She also recorded a team-high 33 digs in the match.
Junior Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had her best match of the season, registering nine kills and 14 digs. Fellow junior Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa.) added four kills while leading the team with 20 assists. She also posted four service aces and 16 digs in the match. Sophomore Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa.) put down a season-high seven solo blocks and added one block assist. Freshman Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) shared the setting duties, handing out 11 assists. Classmate Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa.) was credited with 23 digs.
For the match, the Lady Warriors hit .075 to Wilkes’ .058 and held a slim 38-37 advantage in kills.
Lycoming is back in action tomorrow night, Sept. 16, when the team travels to PSU-Altoona for a 7 p.m. match.
