GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 5 in the pool play round of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic. The Lady Warriors dropped their first match of the season, 3-0, against Salisbury but rebounded to pick up a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite in the second match of the day.
Lycoming (5-1) dropped the first match of the tournament by set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21. The Lady Warriors registered nine kills on 37 attack attempts in the first set and just 10 kills in each of the final two sets.
Junior Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the way with seven kills and four digs in the match. Senior Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) had six kills and six digs. Juniior Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa.) handed out 15 assists, five in each set.
The offense picked up for Lycoming in the second match as the team landed 11 kills in the first set, 14 in the second and 15 in the third. The Lady Warriors took the match over Eastern Mennonite with set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21.
Frantz led the way in the second match, posting double digit kills with 10. She also registered 17 digs and two blocks (one solo, one assist). Sophomore Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa.) had eight kills and three solo blocks. Freshman Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) handed out 19 assists while Myers recorded 16.
The Lady Warriors will advance to the consolation bracket on Saturday as a result of finishing second in their pool. They are scheduled to play two matches, the first against Scranton at 10 a.m., and the second against a yet-to-be-determined opponent at 2 p.m.
