ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team dropped two matches on Friday, Sept. 26, in the opening round of the Elizabethtown Tournament. The Lady Warriors fell 3-0 against St. Mary’s in the first match of the day and 3-0 against Carnegie Mellon in the nightcap.
Lycoming (8-8) was undersized in each of the matches with both St. Mary’s and Carnegie Mellon boasting much taller lineups.
“We had a tough time against those teams because of our size,” said head coach Tim McMahon. “We were probably giving up an average of four inches per player on the court.”
The Lady Warriors opened the tournament with a 3-0 setback against St. Mary’s, falling by set scores of 25-21, 25-8 and 25-19.
Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) led the team with six kills and 14 digs. Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted five kills and nine digs while Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa.) had four kills in 10 attack attempts.
Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) had nine assists while Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa.) added seven. Myers also had two aces and 13 digs in the match. Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa.) recorded 29 digs and one ace.
Lycoming finished the match with 23 kills in 110 attempts for a .082 hitting percentage.
In the second match of the evening, the Lady Warriors fell in three sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) against Carnegie Mellon.
Schulze led the way with a season-high nine kills in just 14 attempts for a season-best .500 hitting percentage. Machella had seven kills and Frantz had five. Myers handed out 14 assists with Sharlow adding 11. Abel led the defensive effort with 21 digs.
The team finished with 28 kills in 83 attempts for a.217 hitting percentage.
The Lady Warriors will face Widener at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, in the final game of the opening round of the tournament.
