Lady Warriors drop Commonwealth opener at Elizabethtown

Heather FrantzELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team dropped its Commonwealth Conference opener, 3-0, at Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Elizabethtown (7-8, 1-0) claimed the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-20.

The Lady Warriors (8-6, 0-1) struggled offensively, managing just 19 kills and finishing the match with a -.009 hitting percentage. Elizabethtown finished the match with 40 kills and a hitting percentage of .214.

Senior Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) led the Lady Warriors with four kills and 11 digs in the match. Junior Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) matched Frantz with four kills and added four digs.

Freshman Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) handed out 10 assists in the match while fellow freshman Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa.) led the team in digs with 19. Junior Katie Johnson (Newville, Pa.) had three blocks in the match.

Lycoming will return to Elizabethtown this weekend, Sept. 26-27, for the Elizabethtown Tournament. The Lady Warriors will face St. Mary’s at 4:30 p.m. and Carnegie Mellon at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and will square off against Widener at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
