Lycoming volleyball rallies for 3-2 win at PSU-Altoona

Lycoming volleyballALTOONA, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Penn State-Altoona, 3-2, on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The Lady Warriors won the final two sets by two points each.

Lycoming opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first set before suffering 25-19 and 25-21 losses in the second and third sets.

The Lady Warriors rallied to win the fourth set, 25-23, and the decisive fifth set, 16-14.

Senior Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) continued to lead the squad, registering a season-best 18 kills in the match. She also recorded 20 digs in the match. She was joined by junior Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) on the offensive attack. Machella posted season-highs in kills (13) and digs (19).

Freshman setter Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the team in assists with 23 and also registered 14 digs. Fellow setter Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa.) handed out 18 assists while also landing two service aces and recording 13 digs. Freshman libero Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa.) led the team in digs with 28.

As a team, the Lady Warriors registered 47 kills in 190 attempts for a .105 hitting percentage.

Tuesday’s match was the first five-setter of the season for the Lady Warriors, who improved to 8-5 on the year.

Lycoming will take a rare weekend off and return to action on Sept. 23, at Elizabethtown. That match, which is the Commonwealth Conference opener, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
