CRESSON, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team opened the season with three wins on Friday night, Aug. 29, at the Mt. Aloysius Tournament. The Lady Warriors defeated teams from Mt. Aloysius, PSU-Fayette and Lancaster Bible without dropping a game.
“We played pretty well tonight,” said head coach Tim McMahon. “Our experienced players stepped up and carried us when we needed them to and our freshmen looked impressive throughout the night.”
Lycoming (3-0), opened the season with a 4 p.m. showdown with the host school. The Lady Warriors picked up a 3-0 win with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-22.
Senior Heather Frantz led the way with seven kills in the first match while junior Abby Myers recorded 13 assists and freshman Emily Abel added 21 digs.
After less than an hour of rest, the Lady Warriors defeated PSU-Fayette by a score of 3-0 with game scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19.
Senior Michelle Burpoe led the attack in the second match, posting 10 kills. Fellow senior Heather Frantz had seven kills while junior Beth Machella and sophomore McKenna Warren each added five kills. Freshman Amy Sharlow made her collegiate debut memorable, handing out 24 assists in the match. Abel recorded a season-best 27 digs in the match.
Playing in their third consecutive match of the evening, the Lady Warriors then defeated Lancaster-Bible 3-0 to remain perfect on the night. Lycoming faced the biggest scare of the entire night during the first game of the match but the Lady Warriors hung on for a 26-24 win, followed by wins of 25-14 and 25-20.
Sophomore Megan Schulze led the way in the third match with six kills. Burpoe and Frantz had four kills each while Frantz also had 10 digs. Myers and Sharlow shared the setting duties, each recording 13 assists.
The Lady Warriors will open the home schedule on Sept. 3 when Mt. Aloysius travels to Williamsport for a rematch of Friday’s opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Lamade Gymnasium.
