WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming sophomore men’s swimmer John Dougherty (Mountain Top, Pa./Bishop Hoban) established a new school record for the 200-yard freestyle race at the 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, which were held at the Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Feb. 8-10. .
Dougherty swam a 1:47.65 in the 200-free finals of the championships. The previous Warrior record of 1:47.81 was set by Neil Ryan in 1994.
“John is a great young man and works very hard in training,” said Lycoming head coach Jerry Hammaker. “He has definitely earned breaking the record of a current Lyco Hall of Famer. John adds a great deal of character to our program.”
Adding to Dougherty’s accomplishment was the fact that his high school team held its home meets in the same pool at the Catholic Youth Center where he set the record.
Dougherty finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, as well as placing sixth in the 100-yard freestyle at the championships. Lycoming’s men’s and women’s swimming teams both took third place at the MACs.
