CHESTER, Pa.—Lycoming’s men’s lacrosse team (8-4, 3-1) edged Widener (6-6, 3-1) by a score of 11-10 in a thrilling conference match-up on Saturday. The result ties both teams for second place currently in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Seniors Dan Cannon (Orangeville, Ont.) and Jim Cusick (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Ed Williams (Florham Park, N.J.) scored two goals apiece. Cannon and sophomore Nate Walter (Harrisburg, Pa.) dished three assists each.
After Widener opened the scoring, the Warriors reeled off three-straight goals by Cannon, Cusick and sophomore Kevin Devenney (Broomall, Pa.). The teams traded scores to begin the second quarter, with freshman Kevin Pfister (Tom’s River, N.J.) converting for Lycoming, but Widener netted three-straight goals to go up 5-4 at the half.
Cannon, Cusick, Williams and sophomore Steven Henz (Shoreham, N.Y.) put it between the pipes in the third period. Cannon’s goal came with 52 seconds left in the quarter and tied the game 8-8 going into the final frame.
Sam Foreman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Williams scored less than a minute apart to begin the fourth, followed by a Rick DeNenno (Landenburg, Pa.) goal that put the Warriors up 11-8 with 4:47 left on the clock.
Lycoming’s defense, led by junior goalie Kyle Gilfoy (Exton, Pa.), held the Pride scoreless for over four minutes before Widener’s Chris Matthews found the net at 0:37 and then again at 0:20. The Warriors survived the final 20 ticks to grab their third conference win. Gilfoy recorded 15 saves and a pair of ground balls to claim the victory.
Lycoming hosts DeSales on Saturday April 19 at 1 p.m. at Shangraw Athletic Complex.
