WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—On a cold, rainy Saturday, Lycoming’s men’s lacrosse team (1-3) dominated Wells College by a score of 27-1 at Shangraw Athletic Complex. It was Wells’ inaugural men’s lacrosse game.
Warrior senior Dan Cannon (Orangeville, Ont.) had five goals and five assists, all in the first half, as Lycoming scored early and often, recording 19 first-half goals. Cannon started the fireworks 34 seconds into the game with an unassisted strike. He followed by assisting Ed Williams (Florham Park, N.J.) and Jeff DeLong (Hilton, N.Y.) within three minutes.
Freshman Andrew Stoner (Orangeville, Ont.) scored an unassisted goal at 10:29 on his way to four goals and three assists for the game. Stoner’s first score was followed by back-to-back unassisted goals by Nate Walter (Harrisburg, Pa.). Stoner then scored two more goals, one assisted by Cannon, who followed with an unassisted goal.
Williams scored unassisted and freshman Sam Foreman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took a Cannon dish and found the net with 32 seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 11-0. Freshman Chris Berube (Winter Park, Fla.) found the net off of a Matt Smith (Rochester, N.Y.) assist in the first minute of the second period. Sophomore Steven Henz (Shoreham, N.Y) put it between the pipes a minute later. Stoner assisted Williams, then scored unassisted at 12:03 in the second.
Cannon assisted Berube, then scored three goals to end the first half. Two of Cannon’s closing goals were assisted by Henz.
With the score 19-0, Lycoming slowed its attack after the break. Stoner assisted Jim Cusick (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Henz. Henz returned the favor by helping Ricky DeNenno (Landenberg, Pa.). Dan Baron (Glen Ridge, N.J.) notched his first goal of the year unassisted and the Warriors were up 23-0 going into the final frame.
Henz fed his fourth assist of the second half to Smith early in the fourth quarter. Freshmen Nathan McKinney (Liverpool, N.Y.), Josh Perreault (Penn Yan, N.Y) and Sean Hogan (Berkley Heights, N.J.) all scored unassisted as the game waned.
Wells’ Justin Zehr made school history by scoring the program’s first goal at 4:21 in the fourth period.
Lycoming hosts Elmira on Tuesday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Shangraw Athletic Complex.
