ANNVILLE, Pa.—Lycoming's men's basketball team (11-8, 3-2) defeated Commonwealth Conference opponent Lebanon Valley (8-12, 2-3) in double overtime by a score of 79-75 on Tuesday. Prior to the game, both teams were involved in a four-way tie for second place in the conference.
Sophomore point guard Eric Anthony's (Wheeling, W.V.) three-pointer with time running out at the end of the first overtime tied the game at 68 and set up a second bonus period. In the second overtime, senior David Wilson (Pottsville, Pa.) sealed the victory with a pair of three pointers. Anthony finished the contest with 14 points, while Wilson recorded 10.
Senior Kevin Morris (Camp Hill, Pa.) notched a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, sinking two crucial foul shots to put the victory on ice in the second OT. Greg Sye (Chantilly, Va.) led the Warriors with 21 points for the game, but fouled out with 19 seconds left in the first overtime. Sophomore Ricky Varnell (Patterson, N.Y.) and freshman Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa.) played valiantly in the paint, scoring six points apiece. Varnell matched Sye with seven rebounds.
“What a slugfest by both teams,” said head coach Don Friday after the game. “We needed to win a game like that to know what it takes. I think it will give us a lot of momentum and some swagger (to finish the regular season).”
Lycoming is now tied with Widener (3-2) for second place in the conference. Messiah (2-2) plays Commonwealth leader Albright (3-1) on Wednesday.
The Warriors play on Thursday night in a make-up game versus PSU-Hazleton at 7 p.m. The blue and gold then face Widener on Saturday at Lamade Gymnasium at 3 p.m. The game will be preceded by the women’s team also facing Widener at 1 p.m. Please wear pink to the game, as it is “Think Pink” breast cancer awareness day.
