Annville, Pa. — The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) unveiled a new logo, replacing a long-standing image in the process. The new logo was designed by Murray Hanford, Lycoming College's publications manager.

Hanford has been an essential member of the Lycoming staff since 1991. His duties include the design of numerous print and multimedia publications used by many of the College’s departments. In his time at Lycoming, Hanford has been honored with more than 45 awards for his graphic design work.

MASCAC officials claim the new logo, highlighted by three pillars and the organization’s green and gold color scheme, corrects inaccurate information on a design dating to the 1960s.

“Besides presenting a clearer picture of who we are, the new logo has a much-needed modern look,” said Ken Andrews, MASCAC Executive Director.

Messiah College President and Chair of the MASCAC Executive Committee Kim Phipps agreed.

“The MAC is a known brand in college sports, but few people understand how we are structured,” Phipps said. “The MASCAC presidents believe that this logo is a succinct way to describe the current organization.”

The design emerged from a conference-wide contest, won by Hanford. All contestants were asked to include 1912, MAC, Commonwealth, Freedom and Middle Atlantic Conferences, while highlighting the MASCAC emphasis on academics.

“Murray’s design prevailed because it portrayed the stated criteria in a simple way and included a strong link to Division III,” Andrews said.

The new image will serve as a precursor to a completely new MASCAC Web site, scheduled to be unveiled this fall.

“The new conference logo and Web site symbolically usher in a new era for us,” Phipps said. “Our association has been enhanced over the last couple of years with strong presidential leadership, the addition of new conference members and an enhanced appreciation of our long association with Division III.”

Founded in 1912, the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation, commonly known as the MAC, is an umbrella organization of three conferences – Commonwealth, Freedom, and Middle Atlantic. The 22 conference sports are nationally competitive in NCAA Division III. Member schools are: Albright College, Alvernia College, Arcadia University, Delaware Valley College, DeSales University, Eastern University, Elizabethtown College, Fairleigh Dickinson University - The College at Florham, King’s College, Lebanon Valley College, Lycoming College, Manhattanville College, Messiah College, Misericordia University, Widener University and Wilkes University.
