WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College assistant football coach Drew DiGiacinto hosted the Lineman’s Challenge last week at David Person Field. The one-day competition for high school linemen drew the largest numbers in its history with more than 120 athletes from 14 schools in attendance.
“We had the largest number of schools, players and coaches attend this year,” said DiGiacinto, who enters his third year as an assistant coach with the Warriors. “We had schools from all over the state this year and it was a great success.”
Teams stretching from Wilkes-Barre and the Poconos to Lancaster attended the challenge.
The event pairs five athletes together on a team and gives high school lines a chance to build chemistry by working toward a total team score.
The challenge is set up with seven preliminary events and two final events. Bench pressing, seven-man sled, 100-yard shuttle run, one-man sled relay, obstacle course, push ups and the tire toss make up the first seven events. The winning team in each event receives 10 points with second earning five points and third earning three. The final two events are an arm wrestling tournament and a tug-of-war contest.
Muncy took the overall title this season, making it two years in a row that a local team has earned the top spot. Last year, Loyalsock won the challenge and then advanced into the state playoffs during the regular season.
Football summer camps wrap up this week at the College before the 2008 rendition of the Warriors report to preseason camp on Aug. 13.
