Cross country teams fair well at sloppy Ursinus Invitational

Steven BrownCOLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Lycoming College cross country teams took part in the rain-soaked Ursinus Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6. The men’s team placed sixth in a race that featured a division I team while the women’s squad got another sound performance from senior Kari Smith.

The Warrior men placed sixth out of eight teams with 189 points. The U.S. Naval Academy claimed the top spot with a combined score of 15 points.

Junior Steven Brown (Lock Haven, Pa.) led the way for Lycoming, finishing 32nd with a time of 33:11.07 over the 8,000-meter course. Fellow junior Greg Sledzik (White Hall, Md.) was the second Warrior across the line, finishing in 41st at 34:10.53. Freshman Robert Wiechecki (Garnett Valley, Pa., 49th, 35:21.82), senior Tim Miller (Lansdowne, Pa., 58th, 37:38.83) and sophomore Jordan Baker (St. Mary’s, Pa., 64th, 39:48.12) rounded out the scorers for Lycoming.

The women’s team placed four runners, which did not allow for a team score. Five runners must complete the race in order to record a complete score.

Senior captain Kari Smith (Corning, N.Y.) led the way with a 26th place finish on the 5,000-meter course, crossing the line in 23:51.40. Freshman Alex Rinaldi (Sellersville, Pa.) placed 48th in 27:26.15. She was followed by junior Holly Andrews (Plymouth, Pa., 54th, 28:34.23) and senior Gillian Robbins (Mt/ Holly, N.J., 61st, 31:40.36).

Both teams will rest next weekend and will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Misericordia.
