As part of
its long-standing historical tradition of preparing young men and women for
ministry, Lycoming College maintains a strong program in Biblical studies,
including the opportunity to study the Biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek,
offered in alternating years.
Studying Hebrew and/or Greek is highly
recommended for students planning to enter the ministry, and is required for
Archaeology majors.
In addition, Lycoming College offers an
Interdisciplinary Minor in Biblical Languages, consisting of HEBR
101-102, GRK 101-102, plus two additional semesters of intermediate-level Hebrew
and/or Greek chosen from HEBR 221, HEBR 222, GRK 221, and GRK 222.
Lycoming College now also offers Latin: LAT 101-102, 221, 222 (2-yr
sequence offered concurrently with the Hebrew sequence).
Latin may be used to fulfill the ancient language requirement for the
archaeology major as well as for language distribution.

The
Academic Resource Center offers excellent tutoring services in both Hebrew
and Greek.
For Hebrew, our current tutors are Cynthia
Betz and Michele Burns.
For Greek, our current tutors are Katie
John, Jill Parker, and Brandon Stewart.
Snowden Library also has a fine collection of Biblical Language Resources,
including Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries, Lexicons, Encyclopedias, Concordances
and Commentaries.

Biblical Languages (Hebrew)
The
Language Lab (Academic Center, 2nd floor, "C" wing) is equipped with
machines for listening to language tapes. Hebrew language tapes designed
to complement our textbook (Biblical Hebrew, Kittel) are available at the
campus store and at http://www.Amazon.com.
Latin tapes are available from Steven Johnson or from the Language Lab.
The computer in the Language Lab is set up with the Teknia Vocab Drilling
Program for Hebrew and Greek (see below).
Campus Computer Labs B-200 and B-201 in the Academic Center should also be set up with the Teknia Vocabulary Drilling Program for Hebrew and Greek, as well as with Hebrew and Greek programs and fonts that you may use for research projects and composition.

To download your own Hebrew or Greek Vocabulary Drilling Program for your home computer from the web for free, go first to the Teknia site and download the Vocabulary Drilling Program for Greek. This includes a database of Greek vocabulary. To get the database for Hebrew Vocabulary (based on Kittel's grammar) go to Codex, and follow the instructions there to download and install the Hebrew Database in the Teknia drilling program. Codex and Teknia also have lots of other useful resources for Hebrew and Greek.
You can also try the Hebrew programs at "Foundationstone.com.au" or Basics of Biblical Hebrew. Vis-Ed Vocabulary cards are also highly recommended (available from the campus store and at Amazon.com). Or you may wish to purchase a "Hebrew Tutor" or "Greek Tutor" program for your computer.
For an online
version of the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon (BDB), the standard
dictionary for Biblical Hebrew, go to

NetwaysGlobal also has a free online version of the 1839 Biblia Hebraica (a standard Hebrew version of the Hebrew Bible).
For future use, you may wish to purchase "BibleWorks" on CD-Rom, which includes Hebrew and Greek fonts as well as numerous other useful biblical language study tools (http://www.bibleworks.com).
