The teacher education program at Lycoming College brings together a strong liberal arts emphasis, intensive study in an academic major, a carefully planned sequence of professional education courses, and extensive field experiences in the public schools. The best teachers are those who are knowledgeable about areas other than their specialty. All students, even those in elementary education, have a substantive major. The combination of the liberal arts distribution and the depth of study in at least one area of concentration develops communication and critical thinking skills our graduates will need to succeed in the ever-changing world of education. Upon graduation and successful completion of the National Teacher Exams, students earn a Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate which is also recognized by 40 other states. The Education Department is now approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer certification in Special Education: Cognitive, Behavior, Physical/Health Disabilities (CBP/HD) K-12. The first courses were offered during the Fall of 2003.
