The chemistry program at Lycoming College
is constantly growing and changing to meet the demands of the field and
to best prepare students for careers in chemistry and related
professions.
The department is approved by the American Chemical Society and is
located in the Heim Biology and Chemistry Building - one of the most
state-of-the-art facilities in the East. Outstanding features of the
building include: individual fume hood and bench space for each student
in advanced labs, computer software for modeling of molecular systems, a
gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and a 300-MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer.
A professionally active faculty of four full-time professors and two
part-time instructors matches the excellent facilities. Areas of
specialized interest within the faculty range from inorganic and
analytical chemistry, to organic chemistry and spectroscopy, to
organometallic chemistry and crystallography. One advantage of attending
a small liberal arts institution is that you have the opportunity to
work side-by-side with your professors on laboratory research projects.
The department also sponsors on-campus summer research with paid student
research teams under faculty supervision. These 10-week experiences have
led to research publications and presentations by students at area and
national science conferences.
Many chemistry majors at Lycoming continue their education at either
graduate or professional schools. Recent choices include Bucknell,
Buffalo, Clemson, Hershey Medical, Johns Hopkins, Lehigh, Miami,
Michigan, Penn State, Virginia, and Wharton. Those chemistry students
who decide to enter the workforce upon graduation find employment
relating to their major ranging from research chemists to product
development engineers and from sales executives to teachers. Among the
many employers of Lycoming graduates are American Cyanamid, DuPont,
Lonza, Merck, IBM, International Paper, Litton, National Starch, and the
United States Department of Agriculture.
