Your interest in science is a wise one.
The demand for biology grads in this new century in health care,
research, the environment, and education is expected to increase.
Biology is the largest major at Lycoming. The success of the biology
department can be attributed to four factors: excellent facilities,
dedicated teaching, advising, and most importantly, fun-loving,
hard-working students. Seven teacher/scholars comprise the biology
faculty. All are seasoned professionals; all are full-time and all have
a doctorate.
The Heim Biology and Chemistry Building is one of the premiere
undergraduate science facilities in the East. Opened in 1990, this
magnificent building is dedicated to teaching, learning, and biological
research. It features a tissue culture lab, histology lab, molecular
lab, radiation lab, aquarium room, greenhouse, plant science lab, an
approved animal room, scanning electron microscope, and darkroom.
Independent research is encouraged at Lycoming.
Lycoming students gain "real world" experience through
internships. A sampling of facilities students intern at include the
Pennsylvania Fish Commission, New Jersey Aquarium, the Pittsburgh Zoo,
Brooks Range in Alaska, Hershey Medical Center, Lake Tobias Wildlife
Park, Woods Hole Oceanographic Center, University of Georgia Marine Lab
and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
More than 40 percent of biology majors at Lycoming continue their
education at either professional or graduate schools. Recent biology
majors have attended the following schools: Case Western College of
Medicine, Cornell, Villanova, Hershey Medical School, Duke, Pennsylvania
College of Optometry, Alaska Pacific, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
