Physics

Three full-time professors head the physics and astronomy majors at Lycoming College. Students have the opportunity to work closely with these professors in independent studies and research that may lead to publication. Recent independent studies and research have looked at fractal geometry, liquid crystals, biophysics, and nuclear physics.

Five years during the 1990s, Lycoming’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students was recognized as the outstanding chapter of its zone, which includes the likes of Penn, Penn State, Temple, Drexel, and Dickinson. Lycoming also has a highly accessible and successful internship program.

Nearly half of all physics majors continue their education at graduate schools. Graduates from Lycoming have been accepted into programs across the country, including Penn State University, the University of Delaware, the University of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin, Colorado State University, and the Florida Institute of Technology. Those students who decide to enter the workforce find employment relating to their major ranging from sales to industrial research to meteorology.
