Art students at Lycoming begin their
education in the Foundation Program, a seven course core that teaches
the essential skills, grammar and history of visual language. The
student then chooses an area of specialization. Lycoming offers a
BA degree in Studio Art with specializations in Commercial Design,
Painting, Photography/Electronic Art, Printmaking, and Sculpture; a BA
in Art History; and a BA with Teaching Certification (K-12).
The Fine Arts Center has large painting, drawing and figure modeling
studios with twenty foot ceilings and abundant north light. Art history
classes, the visiting artist program, and the art colloquium are held in
our seventy seat lecture hall. The printmaking studio is well equipped
for etching, lithography and silk-screen. On the lower level are
darkrooms and studios for sculpture, ceramics, a foundry and wood shop.
Commercial design, digital imaging web design and interactive art are
taught in the computer graphics lab.
The Art Gallery features 5-6 regional and national exhibitions annually
and provides art students with the opportunity to interact with visiting
artists. The department travels to a major metropolitan area every
semester to visit museums and galleries. The Art department regularly
offers classes involving travel during Lycoming's optional May term.
Recent trips have included photography, painting, drawing and art
history classes in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Jamaica and the outer
banks of North Carolina.
A portfolio review is not required for admission to the art department,
a review is required for department merit scholarships.
