The Functions and Graphs Test
(Please review before Orientation Weekend)
The Functions and Graphs Test is used to determine if certain courses in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics can be taken without additional work in mathematics. Any student who thinks they might major in any of these areas, or might major in any area that requires courses from those areas, or who plans on taking MATH 128 - 129 Calculus with Analytical Geometry for any reason, should take this exam. The questions are multiple choice and the topics covered include polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, their graphs and elementary properties. Below are three sample questions so that you may judge the level of difficulty of typical problems. The solutions
can be viewed by clicking "Show Me The Answers". Remember
NO CALCULATORS of any kind are allowed during this exam.
1. Suppose the sin θ = 4/5 and π/2 ≤ θ ≤ 3π/2. Find cos θ.
ANSWER
2. Simplify log (t / t + 1), where you may assume t > 0.
3. Let f (x) = x2 and simplify the expression [f (2 + h) - f (2)]/ h.
