HANDS UP

,

DON’T

SHOOT

Signs that perceptions and law

systems need to change

BY KERRY RICHMOND, PH.D.

ver the past year, the Lycoming College

community has watched with sadness and

frustration as continued incidents of police

brutality occurred across the country. We listened

to chants of “black lives matter,” “hands up don’t

shoot” and “enough is enough” from individuals

who went to the streets to protest aggressive

police tactics and racial profiling after highly

publicized incidents in Ferguson, Missouri, New

York City and Charleston, South Carolina.
