A
Aswemark thismoment of leadership transition, it is vital that we
renewour identity as a college in theAmerican tradition of the liberal
arts. Sinceour founding in 1812, we have livedby the core values of
the liberal arts.Wehave pursued truth through cultivatingboth critical
reason and an appreciation for wisdom. We have contributed to the
preservation of democracy by preparing youngpeople for citizenship.
We havementored graduates for lives of meaning and careers of
substance by educating thewhole person in a residential setting.
Not only have liberal ideals definedour past, they should serve
as the compass that guides our passage into the future. They should
shape our strategic plan. They should inform the decisions that we
makeabout thephysical campus. They should inspire our dailywork.
And they shoulddefine theways inwhichwe live as a community.
