The department invites theatre professionals to campus every year. These artists may conduct workshops, come into a variety of classes to share their expertise or discuss the world of professional theatre, and perform alongside our students in Welch Theatre productions.
In the fall of 2004, Highwire, Inc., a professional theatre company based in New York City, spent a week on campus offering talks, acting workshops, and mounting a production of David Mamet’s Boston Marriage. Highwire returned in 2006 to share the Welch Theatre stage with our students in the production of The Maids.
Larry Joe Campbell, star of ABC‘s sitcom “According to Jim,” spent several days on campus in 2005. Campbell and members of his improvisation troupe, The 313, performed for the campus community and also conducted improv workshops for theatre students. In addition, Larry and friends assisted students in creating a short film that was shown on campus.

He conducted workshops on Shakespeare, coached student scenes, and performed in our productions of Look Homeward, Angel and Machinal.
In the spring of 2009, Lycoming alumna Mary Ethel Schmidt returns to perform in Full Gallop as part of the Welch Theatre season. Schmidt, a member of Actors’ Equity Association, is also a professional director and playwright. |
